Audra McDonald Information

Born in Germany and raised in California, Audra McDonald's parents got her involved in theater as a child to channel her hyperactivity. Audra McDonald is a 1993 graduate of Julliard. She has broken barriers as the first African American cast in stage roles traditionally held by white actors.

Audra McDonald won her first Tony Award for her role in Carousel in 1994. Her role as Sharon in Master Class in 1995 earned her a second Tony and a third came in the musical Ragtime in 1998. Her fourth Tony award came for her performance as Ruth Younger in the revival of A Raisin in the Sun.

McDonald has also acted in film and on television. She released three solo albums, Way Back to Paradise, How Glory Goes, and Happy Songs. She has also performed in numerous PBS specials.
