Audioslave is an alternative rock group consisting of Chris Cornell (formerly of Soundgarden) and the instrumentalists of Rage Against the Machine. The current members of the band the Chris Cornell ( Vocals), Tom Morello (Lead Guitar), Brad Wilk (Drums) and Tim Commerford (Bass). When Zack de la Rocha left Rage Against the Machine in October 2000, the band's future was obviously in question. Rumors began brewing in 2002 that the instrument-wielding members of Rage Against The Machine known for bringing the hybrid of rap and metal to the masses and singer Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, the powerhouse Seattle-based grunge band whose 1994 album "Superunknown" yielded seemingly countless radio hits, were planning to joining forces and create a new band.

The band formed was what would come to be known as Audioslave. Although the newly formed quartet made it clear that they were not the new millennium's Soundgarden or RATM, they weren't sure what to call their new project after facing legal issues securing the band names Civilian and Audioslave, both which were already taken. But an unsigned British band already going by the moniker of Audioslave eventually struck a lucrative monetary deal that allowed the Cornell-fronted American band to also use the name. Other problems however rose up again. In spring 2002, the foursome were no longer going by the Rage Against the Machine name and signed on for Ozzfest. But before the summer tour even got underway, Cornell quit the new project. He claimed it wasn't moving forward in the direction he'd hoped for. The breakdown didn't last, for Cornell joined the rest of the band by early fall. Subsequent interviews with the band revealed that early problems had been partly due to external pressures which were resolved when the band members sacked their previous management companies and hired Los Angeles company The Firm.

They released their first studio album self-titled "Audioslave" in November 2002, which drew mixed reactions from critics but just as fast attained double platinum-selling status. First single "Cochise," which is named for the great American Indian chief who died free and unconquered, debuted in September 2002 and did moderately well among radio. Audioslave's Epic debut was released in November. The band is often pictured as a a group of millionaire musicians who constantly argued during album production, and whose 1970s rock sound is primarily the result of post-studio modification. Others compared them to Led Zeppelin, saying they add much-needed sound and style to contemporary mainstream music. They toured extensively worldwide in 2003, silencing many critics and gaining largely positive reviews for their spectacular live performances. With the sounds of guitarist Tom Morello's signature funk and punk riffs, Brad Wilk's pounding tom-tom beats, bassist Tim Commerford's grinding envelope filtered lines and Cornell's signature brink-of-explosion vocals, Audioslave is scheduled to be one of the greatest bands in rock music. Audioslave is expected to release a new album in 2005.
