Asleep at the Wheel Information

The core band members of Asleep at the Wheel are Ray Benson (guitar), Jason Roberts (fiddle), David Sanger (drums), David Miller (bass), John Whitby (piano), Haydn Vitera (fiddle), and Eddie Rivers (steel guitar). Yet the Western swing band from Texas has been home to more than 80 artists since their 1970 inception. Influenced by Big Band, Blues, Country and Folk, Ray Benson has been leading the way for Asleep at the Wheel for more than 35 years. As Benson puts it, "We're a dance band. That's what we're about. And that's plenty."

Named "Best Country & Western Band" by Rolling Stone magazine in 1977, they also received acclaim from the Academy of Country music as Touring Band of the Year.

Without changing to adapt to radio expectations Asleep at the Wheel has won praise and admiration from everyone from Willie Nelson to Bob Dylan, George Strait to Van Morrison. The band's biggest success was in 1999; their critically acclaimed release Ride with Bob struck gold on the charts. In 2005 and 2006 Asleep at the Wheel made appearances in the theatre production A Ride With Bob, a musical drama about Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.
