John Wetton, Steve Howe, Geoff Downes, and Carl Palmer formed Asia in 1981. They had all been in the music business as former members of Yes, King Crimson, Emerson Lake and Palmer, and The Buggles. The progressive English rock band enjoyed success out of the gate with their self-titled debut spending nine weeks at No. 1 on the charts. "Only Time Will Tell" and "Heat of the Moment" became huge Top 40 hits but the critics never backed the band. And follow up albums could never match Asia's early success.

A series of lineup changes followed after their second album which reached No. 6 on the charts. In 1990 "Days Like These" was their last charting single. However, the band continued to record new material with an endless number of guests. In 2004 the most recent release, Silent Nation, became the first album not to begin with the letter A. It reached No. 77 on the charts. In 2006 the original line up planned a reunion tour in the U.S., where they enjoyed the greatest success.
