Jazz trumpeter and pianist Arturo Sandoval was born November 6, 1949 in Cuba. He began playing music at the age of 12, and finally settled on the trumpet after trying various instruments. When he was 16, Arturo Sandoval was a member of the all-star national band of Cuba and idolized Dizzy Gillespie.
Although he is known for his jazz work, Arturo Sandoval has also dabbled in classical, Salsa, Be-bop, and Cubop. His band Irakere became a worldwide sensation in 1978 after the Newport Jazz Festival introduced them to American audiences. Soon after, they signed with Columbia Records. Arturo Sandoval would leave the band a few years later to begin his solo career.
Throughout his career, Arturo Sandoval has been a sideman for Gloria Estefan, Paul Anka, Frank Sinatra, and Dave Grusin recordings and has played for Herbie Hancock, Woody Shaw, Stan Getz, Tony Bennett, Patti LaBelle, Celine Dion, and Woody Herman in concert. Arturo Sandoval has released over three dozen albums, with the most recent one in 2005, Live at the Blue Note.
