"The Queen Of Soul" is a title only one can hold. Aretha Franklin was born in Memphis but raised in Detroit. In addition to her R&B and soul contributions, Aretha Franklin has also tackled jazz, rock, blues, pop, gospel, and even opera. Growing up without a mother she sang at her father's church with her sisters, Carolyn and Erma, and made her first recordings at the age 14. She gave birth to Clarence, Jr. when she was 15 and Edward "Eddie" was born when she was 16. She dropped out of high school and her grandmother took in her sons to help Aretha move on in her career.
By the late 1960s, Aretha Franklin had become an internationally famous artist and a symbol of pride in the Black community. Among her most successful hit singles from this era were "Chain of Fools", "You Make Me Feel (Like a Natural Woman)", "Think", and "Respect", a cover of an Otis Redding single which became her signature song. She was married to Ted White from 1962 to 1969 and they had one son. She was married to actor Glynn Turman from 1978 to 1984. Her popularity begun to decrease in the late 1970s but she will always enjoy status as a musical legend.
She has won 18 Grammy Awards, including an unprecedented 11 for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and one for Lifetime Achievement. In 1987 she became the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Both President Clinton and President Bush have awarded Aretha Franklin national medals.
