Anthrax is a heavy metal band based out of New York City. Anthrax has been going strong ever since their 1984 debut release. Included in the "big four" of thrash metal (along with Metallica, Slayer, and Megadeath), Anthrax began with drummer Charlie Benante, guitarists Scott Ian and Dan Spitz, bassist Dan Liker, and singer Neil Turbin.

Following the release of their first two albums, Anthrax replaced their singer with Joey Belladonna and their bassist with Frank Bell. Now their lineup was complete, and it remained unchanged from that day. Following the lineup mix up, Anthrax began to move away from the stereotypical sound of that of Judas Priest and combine a mix of punk and speed metal to give them a much-needed boost. The third release by Anthrax, Among The Living, is considered by many to be the band's greatest release. With their lighter song topics such as Stephen King novels and comic books, Anthrax managed to appeal as a more contemporary artist even if they did not become as popular as the rest of the "big four."

Following the next few releases, Anthrax became more experimental with their sound. Within a few years, Anthrax had influenced bands such as Rage Against the Machine and Korn. After drama with Elektra Records which included Anthrax's assumption that Elektra tried to kill the album Stomp 442, Anthrax moved to a small independent label and released Volume 8: The Threat Is Real in 1998. Shortly thereafter, the label went under and Anthrax signed with another label that soon went under.

Despite all of the frustration, Anthrax continued on. In 2002, Anthrax released We've Come For You All, which was considered by the metal press to be a return to form for Anthrax. The Greater of Two Evils was released in 2004, and there is speculation that Anthrax might release an album of new material in 2006. Anthrax still continues to tour, more than 20 years after their first album.
