Many thought Anita Baker came out of no where when she began chalking up R&B hits in the early '80s, but she actually got her first record deal singing for the popular Detroit band Chapter 8. But when their record company was bought out the new Arista executives didn't recognize her talent. She went home and got a 9-5 job as a receptionist. A contact from the band later formed his own label and sought out Anita Baker. She chose the stability of her job initially but he eventually convinced her to sing.

Singing soul, jazz and gospel, Anita Baker's solo debut came out in 1983, producing four chart hits. However Beverly Glen did not record another album. So Anita Baker landed a major label contract and released her second album, Rapture in 1986. It earned her first two Grammy Awards, produced the single "Sweet Love," and sold six million copies.

In 1987, Anita Baker collaborated with The Winans on the single "Ain't No Need To Worry" and this single got Anita Baker her third Grammy. In between a busy performance schedule she recorded the follow up album Giving You The Best That I Got. Released in 1988, the album became a critical and commercial success. The songstress also married in 1988.

Anita Baker continues to record, appearing on the R&B and jazz charts, but she has not achieved the same level of commercial success. Anita Baker's greatest hits compilation and her 2004 release My Everything were both certified Gold. Her most recent release was the 2005 Christmas album, Christmas Fantasy.
