Singer, guitarist, songwriter and record company executive Ani DiFranco was born in 1970. Ani is short for Angela. At the age of nine she was playing guitar as a street performer and performing Beatles cover songs at local bars, accompanied by her guitar teacher. At 18 she started her own record company with just $50. Her company Righteous Babe Records released her first album in 1990 with a release following almost every year since. Her music is considered folk rock or alternative rock but she is noted for crossing genres and collaborations. She plays a variety of string instruments as well as percussion. Her guitar work has a signature staccato style.

Ani DiFranco is a prolific song writer, tackling social themes and political issues. She has turned down lucrative recording contracts in favor of maintaining the artistic freedom she enjoys with her own record label. Noted for her use of metaphors, her clever wordplay, and her subtle humorous lyrics, Ani DiFranco has earned a strong cult following despite limited radio airplay. Her songs have discussed racism, sexism, sexual abuse, homophobia, reproductive rights, poverty, and war and she is seen as a feminist icon. In 2006 she was awarded the Woman of Courage Award at the National Organization for Women (NOW) Conference and Young Feminist Summit.

Ani DiFranco is openly bisexual. She is the daughter of an Italian-American father and a Jewish-American mother. She is divorced and is expecting her first child. Born in Buffalo, N.Y., her record label is based in a historic church she saved from demolition in Buffalo. Her most recent album is 2006's Reprieve.
