Classical pianist Andre Watts was born in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1946 to a Hungarian mother, Maria Alexandra Gusmits, and African-American father, Sergeant Herman Watts. His mother was a pianist and encouraged him by telling him stories of famous musicians from her country. Frank Liszt became his hero.
Andre Watts beat out 40 other children at the age of 9 to appear in the Philadelphia Orchestra's Children's Concerts. Studying at the Philadelphia Academy of Music, Andre Watts continued to hit musical milestones while still a young teen. By age 16 Andre Watts had played his hero Franz Liszt's E-flat Concerto at Lincoln Center with the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Leonard Bernstein. In 1963 he debuted in front of a national television audience.
Andre Watts earned a bachelor of music degree at the Peabody Institute. By 21, Andre Watts had a long-term recording concert and was on a concert schedule booked three years in advance. Andre Watts has played with the most prestigious orchestras in the world, including the National Symphony Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra. In 1976 Andre Watts became the first televised solo recital, airing on PBS. Andre Watts continues as one of the world's "greatest in demand" pianists. He is also a Professor at the Jacobs School of Music of Indiana University in Bloomington.
