As the son of a conductor violinist, Andre Rieu loved music but disliked the somber atmosphere of concert halls. Andre Rieu created his own vision, an orchestra of young, enthusiastic musicians who have fun during their concerts. Andre Rieu would rather see the audience clap, sway and feel a part of the music.
Andre Rieu started taking violin lessons at the age of five. After years of training Andre Rieu recruited his own orchestra. New Year's Day 1988 saw André Rieu and his Johann Strauss Orchestra give their first public concert. By 1995, when Andre Rieu played his "Second Waltz" during an international football match, he had already started making classical music more accessible to a wider audience.
His albums soared up the charts in several countries, rivaling the success of major pop stars. Andre Rieu went on to tour the world bringing the classics, popular songs, and his own compositions to the masses. His success and revival of the waltz earned Andre Rieu the title "The Waltz King of Europe." Several PBS specials have showcased Andre Rieu and broadened his audience. The Dutch violinist and conductor creates lively and colorful orchestral presentations and mixes the type of music he plays to draw audiences that normally aren't attracted to classical music.
