Warner Brothers Records' biggest selling act of the 1970s was America. Its members include Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell, and Dan Peek. These three friends from high school developed a three-part vocal harmony in their late teens. The band members were all children of American military fathers and British mothers. They released their first album in 1971. Releasing the single "A Horse With No Name", it became a major worldwide hit in early 1972. It was added to their debut album and the album was rereleased, eventually going platinum.

America relocated to Los Angeles for their second album and earned the Grammy Award for Best New Artist of 1972. "Ventura Highway" hit Top 10. However, America was less successful with their third album. They began working with legendary Beatles producer George Martin and the next two albums were hits. "The Tin Man" and "Sister Golden Hair Surprise" topped the charts. All of their albums were named beginning with the letter H. America's success began to decline in the late 1970s and Dan Peek left the band seeking a more Christian lifestyle and helped pioneer the rise of Christian Pop.

America went on as a duo scoring one more hit "You Can Do Magic" in 1982. They had limited success with contributions to the feature films The Last Unicorn and The Lonely Guy.
