In 1987, singer Layne Staley met guitarist and song-writer Jerry Cantrell; soon, bassist Mike Starr and drummer Sean Kinney joined Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell to form the band Alice in Chains. They began playing in clubs in Seattle. When Alice in Chains signed with Columbia Records in 1989, they released a string a demo EPs. The first full LP by Alice in Chains, Facelift, was released in 1990. The single "Man in the Box" helped the release go Gold by the end of the year.
The follow up to Facelift, Dirt, was released in the fall of 1992. Dirt was both a critical and commercial success. It hit Platinum by the end of the year, and is the band's most successful release to date. Mike Starr left the band and was replaced by former Ozzy Osbourne bassist Mike Inez. In the summer of 1993, Alice in Chains signed onto Lollapalooza. The Jar of Flies EP, released one year later, became the first EP ever to hit No. 1 on the charts.
A few years later, Alice in Chains released a self-titled album, and it debuted at No. 1 on the charts. Again, Alice in Chains failed to tour in support of the release. After a three year absence from performing live, Alice in Chains made an appearance on MTV's Unplugged in 1996. In 1998, Jerry Cantrell released Boggy Depot, which is considered by many to be the "lost" Alice in Chains album since it was completed with all but Layne Staley. The fall of 1999 saw Alice in Chains release a 48-song box set,Music Bank, that spanned their career. The follow up Nothing Safe: Best of the Box was a 15-song sampler of Music Bank.
On April 20, 2002, Layne Staley was found dead in his apartment from an apparent lethal overdose of heroin and cocaine. The coroner dated the death of Layne Staley as April 5, the same date as Kurt Cobain. Four years later, Alice in Chains reunited through various performances and are expected to play in various festivals over the summer.
