Alejandro Escovedo Information

From punk rock to alternative country, Alejandro Escovedo covered a lot of ground while finding his true voice as a soloist. He was part of The Nuns, Rank and File, and The True Believers before going solo in 1992. Escovedo's music can range from full force rock'n'roll to the subtle delicacy heard from a string quartet, sometimes in the same song. His huge underground following includes a number of other artists. Musicians including Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, John Cale, Jennifer Warnes, Ian Hunter, The Jayhawks, and Son Volt, as well as family members Pete Escovedo, Javier Escovedo and niece Sheila E all appeared on a tribute album to raise money for Alejandro Escovedo when he fell ill with Hepatitis C. In 2005, he was found free of the disease. No Depression magazine named him its Artist of the Decade in the 1990s. His latest release was recorded with The Alejandro Escovedo String Quartet. Entitled Boxing Mirror, it came out on May 2, 2006.

He was born in San Antonio, Texas, as the son of an immigrant father from Mexico who sired 12 children and sang in a mariachi bands for extra cash. Alejandro Escovedo is the father of seven.
