Born in Arkansas in 1946 Al Green, aka Reverend Albert Greene, started out singing at the age of nine in the quartet the Greene Brothers. Bandleader Willie Mitchell coached him to solo success. His second album Al Green Gets Next To You (1970), was a massive success that included four gold singles. Green developed his voice and songwriting talents finding his own sound rather than emulating others. Several successful albums followed. His second Top 40 hit, "Let's Stay Together," hit No. 1 in 1972. He went on to have 15 more hit songs climb the charts.

In 1974 his girlfriend poured scalding grits on the singer and then killed herself after Al Green rejected her marriage proposal. Green found solace in God. He converted to Christianity and became an ordained pastor of the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Memphis in 1976. As his success waned in the late 1970s he was injured while performing. Believing the accident was a message from God he recorded his first gospel album The Lord Will Make a Way. From 1981 to 1989 Green recorded a series of gospel recordings, garnering eight "soul gospel performance" Grammy Awards. In the late 1980s Al Green returned to secular music and earned another Grammy. Most recently, in March 2005, Al Green released Everything's Ok.

Al Greene was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and the Gospel Music Association's Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2004. He continues to tour and preach in Memphis.
