Aerosmith has woven its way into the fabric of just about every aspect of American culture since it formed as a hard rock band in the early ?70s. Aerosmith has appeared in the 2001 Super Bowl halftime show, Disney?s Rock ?n? Roller Coaster, television commercials, several video and pinball games, ?The Simpsons? animated television series, the Spiderman cartoon series, and numerous feature films. Films such as Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band , Clueless, Wayne?s World, Mrs. Doubtfire, Armageddon, Be Cool, and Charlie?s Angels all feature Aerosmith. In fact, the lead track for the 1998 film ?Armageddon, ?I Don?t Want to Miss a Thing,? became Aerosmith?s first mega-hit to rise to No. 1 on the music charts, despite the band?s long and accomplished history.
Aerosmith has won Grammy?s, MTV Video Awards, and had a song nominated for an Oscar. In 2001, Aerosmith was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Steven Tyler (lead vocals), Joe Perry (guitar), and Tom Hamilton (bass guitar) formed Aerosmith originally in New Hampshire. The band then replaced Ray Tabano, who left in 1971, with Brad Whitford. Steven Tyler, born Steven Tallarico, was originally a drummer and singer and became a full-time vocalist when drummer Joey Kramer joined Aerosmith. They added Ray Tabano as a second guitarist in Boston, Massachusetts, in the early ?70s.
Aerosmith has long since conquered the world stage with more than 35 years of touring. In 1970, Aerosmith made their first public appearance. After some success doing live shows throughout Boston and the surrounding area, Aerosmith signed its first record deal with Columbia/CBS Records in 1972. Their self-titled album "Aerosmith" was a minor hit largely due to the strength of the classic hit single "Dream On." The album spent a lengthy 85 week stint on the charts. After constant touring, the band released ?Get Your Wings? (1974), which did quite well.
It was the 1975 album "Toys in the Attic" that established Aerosmith as international stars and confirmed the band's stardom, giving rise to a new stadium-filling force. Aerosmith also became a household name. The Top 40 singles "Sweet Emotion" and "Walk This Way" pushed the album to No. 11 and became classic rock staples. Success of the album prompted the re-release of "Dream On," which reached the Top 10 in early 1976. Both of the Aerosmith?s previous albums recharted.
Aerosmith?s fourth album, "Rocks," reached No. 3 in 1976 and quickly went platinum. Aerosmith became a headlining act and was one of the biggest draws in the country. They performed in front of a crowd of 80,000 in Detroit Lion's Stadium and launched a 58-city tour of the United States.
Drugs and alcohol abuse became more evident, with Steven Tyler going as far as wrapping the microphone with a scarf in which pills were hidden. However, Aerosmith continued recording hits. Released late in 1977, the ?Draw the Line? album climbed to No. 11 on the U.S. charts, but Aerosmith showed signs of exhaustion. Aerosmith recorded ?Night in the Ruts? in 1979. By the time of its release, Joe Perry had left the band to form the Joe Perry Project. Brad Whitford left Aerosmith in early 1980. New guitarists Jimmy Crespo and Rick Dufay replaced them. Meanwhile, a serious motorcycle accident landed Steven Tyler in the hospital for months. Following the release of a ?Greatest Hits? album which sold over six million copies, the new incarnation of Aerosmith released the album ?Rock in a Hard Place? in 1982.
Joe Perry and Brad Whitford returned to the band for a 1984 reunion tour. In 1985, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry completed a drug-rehabilitation program. A clean-and-sober Aerosmith, signed a new record deal with Geffen, the band began a new phase. The 1986 album ?Done With Mirrors,? featured the original lineup and the sound which made Aerosmith a hit in the '70s. A guest appearance on Run-D.M.C.'s 1986 cover of "Walk This Way" returned the group to the spotlight and launched a comeback when the single went to No. 4 and became an MTV hit.
In 1989, Aerosmith released ?Pump? with the huge hits, ?Janie's Got a Gun? and ?Love in an Elevator.? The follow-up, 1993's ?Get a Grip,? included the singles ?Cryin',? ?Crazy,? and ?Amazing.? All three videos starring Alicia Silverstone were funny, daring, and hugely popular. Steven Tyler's daughter, Liv Tyler, also appeared in the video for ?Crazy.? ?Nine Lives? followed in 1997, hitting No. 1 on the U.S. charts. 2001?s ?Just Push Play,? ?O, Yeah! The Ultimate Aerosmith Hits,? released in 2002, and 2004?s blues album ?Honkin? on Bobo? all reached top five in the 2005 U.S. charts. Aerosmith has released five live albums and maintains a rigorous touring schedule. They invited Lenny Kravitz and Cheap Trick to tour with them in the "Rockin' The Joint" tour running through 2006. Rumors say that they may team up with Motley Crue in an upcoming tour.
