Abigail Washburn Information

Singer, songwriter, and banjo player Abigail Washburn is an American artist who sometimes records solo and other times accompanies the band Uncle Earl. Abigail Washburn spent time singing back up for gospel, reggae and R&B bands but originally didn't pursue music as a career.

With a spirit as free as her curly red hair she worked as an activist before embarking on a music career. She learned Chinese during a 1996 trip to China. And she bought a banjo as a way to explore her own heritage, but she didn't learn to play it for years. She finally learned to play it to fill in with her friend's band. When their tour was up Abigail Washburn moved to Nashville. There she began playing with Uncle Earl and continued to enhance her finger-picking skills. After winning second in a songwriting contest Abigail Washburn was given a recording contract. She has written songs in English and the Chinese language. Her solo album is entitled Song of the Traveling Daughter.
