Shania Twain was born as Eilleen Regina Edwards in 1965. Her mother remarried and she was adopted at age 6 by Jerry Twain, a full-blooded Ojibwa native. Now named Eilleen Twain, the child from Timmons, Ontario, started out singing in bars after hours. At the age of 13, she was invited to perform on the Tommy Hunter Show on television. During high school Shania Twain was the vocalist for a local band called Longshot. She started to pursue a singing career but tragedy struck. Her parents were killed in an accident and at age 22 she became the guardian for three younger siblings. Shania Twain put her musical career on hold and supported the family by performing at a local resort.
In 1991, Shania Twain was discovered when an entertainment lawyer (Dick Frank) from Nashville, Tennessee, heard her act at a Canadian resort. She changed her name to Shania, which meant "I'm on my way" in Ojibwa. Though Shania Twain wrote her own songs, her label wanted her to use songwriters for her debut self-titled album. The 1993 Shania Twain country album was unsuccessful.
Rock producer Robert "Mutt" Lange offered to produce the next Shania Twain album and to write songs with her. Their relationship became close and the two married in 1993. With Robert Lange's input Shania Twain released a second album which leaned a bit more towards pop.
Robert Lange reportedly bought thousands of the release to spur record sales and get more airplay. The gamble worked and in 1995 The Woman in Me caught fire. Driven by singles such as "Any Man of Mine" and "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under," the album topped the country charts for months and became a massive crossover to mainstream charts, peaking at No. 5 and topping out at 10 million sold. The Woman in Me went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Country Album as well as the Academy of Country Music award for Album of the Year. Shania Twain also earned the ACM for Best New Female Vocalist.
Released in 1997, album three Come On Over initially disappointed in sales. But it kept generating hits, staying on the charts for two years and going on to become the biggest-selling album by a female artist of all time. The album set the record for the longest ever stay in the Top 20 of The Billboard 200, remaining in the Top 20 for 99 weeks.
A 1998 appearance in the first edition of the VH1 Divas concert, put Shania Twain alongside Mariah Carey, Céline Dion, Gloria Estefan, and Aretha Franklin. Shania Twain continued her success. In 1998 Shania Twain launched her first successful major concert tour, quieting critics who questioned her ability to perform live. Shania Twain was named the 1999 Entertainer of the Year by both the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association, one of only five solo women to have earned that CMA title.
After taking time off to have a child in 2001, Shania Twain went back into the studio. Up! was released in November 2002 and a tour followed. Despite poor reviews, Shania Twain fans spoke and the album debuted at No. 1. However, the singles from the album did not perform as well as those from the last Shania Twain album. Shania Twain released a 2004 Greatest hits album, which fared well. After her fame Shania Twain moved to Switzerland to gain privacy. She also owns a sheep ranch in New Zealand. Fans await her next release.
