All five members of the band 311 grew up in Omaha in the ‘70s. Nick Hexum, Tim Mahoney, and Chad Sexton all lived on the west side of Omaha and attended Westside High School. The other two members, P-Nut and SA Martinez lived on the south side and attended Bryan High School.
Nick Hexum moved to Los Angeles following an early graduation from high school in order to pursue a career in music. When he returned to Omaha for Tim Mahoney's and Chad Sexton's graduation, they realized that they had musical chemistry and decided to form a band. With the addition of Ward Bones, they called themselves "Unity." The three of them moved to Los Angeles in 1988 to make what would turn out to be an unsuccessful stab at recording an album.
After several members moved back to Omaha and several members came and left, 311 was finally formed in 1991 with the same members it has today. Their self-released albums in 1991 and 1992 garnered them a following in the Midwest and they soon set out for the West Coast. Their first release,Music, was released in 1993 and was met with little fanfare. One year later, 311 released Grassroots. Although neither album had too much success in the beginning both of the albums have since been certified Gold. It wasn't until the 1995 release of their self-titled album that 311 finally saw success. 311 was eventually certified triple platinum and their first and second singles hit No.1 and No. 2, respectively.
In 1997, 311 averaged more than 10,000 fans at their concerts. In the next few years, 311 re-released some older material on the Omaha Session EP and a live album entitled 311 Live. 311 released two more albums over the next two years, and in 2004 performed a special 3-11 Day concert in New Orleans. The five-hour set had 311 play 68 songs including all of their hits as well as rarities and covers. The concert was released as a 2-DVD set. 311 released their eighth album in 2005 entitled Don't Tread on Me. 311 is currently on the road for their 17-stop Spring Tour.
