It can be said that alternative rock saved rock 'n' roll from the excesses of the 1980s hair-metal hedonism that ran rampant throughout the decade. "Alternative rock" provided an alternative by bringing listeners a stripped-down sound an image (which would quickly become known as "grunge").

While there have been several incarnations of alternative rock, the raw approach to music is constant. Iggy Pop was considered alt rock in the 1960s and David Bowie and the New York Dolls wore the label in the 1970s, as their music and stage shows varied greatly from arena rock.

However, the band that started the alternative rock phase that defined the term for the rest of the century was R.E.M. Michael Stipe took center stage with his high, trembly voice and haunting stage presence, and they became a hit on the college scene. Other groups like Sonic Youth and Talking Heads went underground and became huge, appearing on MTV.

Nirvana made alternative mainstream as the 1990s came along. "Nevermind," with the anthem "Smells Like Teen Spirit," became the album of the decade. Billy Corgan and Smashing Pumpkins attained equal success, although perhaps not as enduring. Since then, grunge is still alive and good, with such acts as the White Stripes and the Hives carrying the "garage band" label.
