The Nutcracker Information

Originally composed in 1891 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, The Nutcracker is a ballet based on the story The Nutcracker and the Mouse Kingby E.T.A. Hoffman. Alexandre Dumas' adaptation of the story was set to music by Tchaikovsky.

Performed around Christmas time The Nutcracker is the story of a girl named Clara and her Christmas gift, a Nutcracker. When she sneaks down to see it in the middle of the night she is caught amid a battle between a band of mice and a group of soldiers led by the Nutcracker. The Nutcracker then turns into a prince.

Willam Christensen, former Ballet master of the San Francisco Ballet, imported the work to the United States in 1944. It went on to become a holiday tradition in many cities.
