The first Mary Poppinsbook was published in 1934 and was made into a Disney movie 30 years later. The original book was written by Pamela Travers at the age of 10 in Australia, soon after the death of her father and while her mother was suffering from severe depression. The nanny was originally more somber in Mary Poppins.
Mary Poppins the musical opened at the Prince Edward Theatre in London in December 2004 and won two Olivier Awards though it was nominated for nine. The musical incorporates songs from the original Mary Poppins. It does, however, have some scarier scenes and is not recommended for very young children. Ages 7 and up are a better fit for Mary Poppins.
