The Lion King was Disney's 32nd animated feature. To date, The Lion King is the highest-grossing traditional animation feature film to be released in the United States. The Disney movie version of The Lion King was released in June 1994. The Lion King is also Disney's only movie with no trace of human existence. The financial success of The Lion King spawned two straight-to-video releases and a spin-off television series.

A theatrical version of The Lion King first opened in Minneapolis on July 31, 1997 at the Orpheum Theatre. Three months later, The Lion King moved to Broadway and has been playing at the New Amsterdam Theater. There are two touring productions of The Lion King in addition to the show on Broadway. In June 2006, Mary Poppins is scheduled to open at the New Amsterdam Theatre and uproot The Lion King . The Lion King is scheduled to move to the Minksoff Theater. The Lion King is also currently playing in London; Hamburg, Germany; Tokyo; and Scheveningen, Netherlands.

The Lion King was nominated for 11 Tony Awards in 1997 and won six of them. Included in the wins were Best Musical, Best Scenic Design of a Musical, and Best Choreography. Over 40 actors take the stage in The Lion King The Lion King play features five songs from the original film as composed by Elton John and Tim Rice. As more songs were needed to portray Simba's life while on stage, South African songwriter Lebo M. Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, and Hans Zimmer lent a hand. The Lion King won more than 25 awards in 1998. Much of the play is still the same.
