Love, death, war, salvation, sacrifice … Les Miserables has it all. The dramatic musical Les Miserables sets the social inequities of its characters against the backdrop of a French revolution. The story of Les Miserables begins after petty thief Jean Valjean is released from prison. He starts his life anew and hides his identity as an ex-convict, breaking the terms of his parole. He achieves great success lying to rise above his previous social class as he tries to atone for his past sins. But he is pursued throughout the play by Javert, a police officer.
Despite years of good deeds Jean Valjean cannot escape his past sins, leaving him Les Miserable. Fleeing the law he goes into hiding with Cosette, the illegitimate daughter of one of his employees who has died. He rescues Cosette from her harsh caretakers who have been mistreating Les Miserable girl in favor of their own daughter Eponine. He raises Cosette in secret. Meanwhile revolution is brewing and wealthy young students such as Marius are at the helm looking to level the social classes and bring relief to Les Miserables, the struggling poor. Love brews among Les Miserable as the social positions of its characters change and secret affections are born. But will Jean Valjean be able to maintain his secrecy and at what cost if he does? Will Les Miserables find a new beginning through revolution? Will Les MiserablesEponine overcome the trappings of her opportunistic family?
Based on the novel by Victor Hugo, Les Miserable explores how situations can drive actions and how actions can lead to unforeseen consequences. It raises questions about the nature of human beings. Les Miserable asks whether social situation and upbringing are the true determinants of character.
On October 9 Les Miserables celebrates its status as the longest running musical on London's West End or Broadway, playing 8,372 performances. The 1985 musical Les Miserables is produced by Cameron Mackintosh. Its 1987 debut on Broadway earned it seven Tony Awards including Best Musical. The musical Les Miserables was written by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg. Music by Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer tell the powerful story of Les Miserables.
