The Tony Award-winning Hairspray has played at the Neil Simon Theatre since August 15, 2003. Based on the 1988 movie of the same name that inspired the theatre production, Hairspray is the story of a girl named Tracy Turnblad who dreams of dancing on the Corny Collins Show out of Baltimore, Maryland. When she finds a way on the show, she begins plotting to racially integrate the Corny Collins Show .
The first theatrical production of Hairspray took place at the Fifth Avenue Theatre in Seattle prior to its arrival in New York City in 2002. Hairspray moved to Broadway in 2003, and has been playing there ever since. While Hairspray was nominated for 13 Tony Awards in 2003, it took home eight. Included in the winnings was a Tony Award for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score (Music and Lyrics) Written for the Theate r. Other awards include various 2003 Drama Desk Awards, and New York Drama Critics' Circle Award (Best Musical). Hairspray features music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Whitman and Mark Shaiman. The Hairspray book was written by Thomas Meehan and is based on John Waters' Hairspray movie.
In addition to the Hairspray show on Broadway, there is a Hairspray show in Las Vegas at the Luxor Hotel. The 90-minute show is scheduled to feature original stars Harvey Fierstein and Dick Latessa and is scheduled to run for 12 weeks beginning in February 2006. Hairspray is also scheduled to tour the United States in 2006.
