The theatre world is at it again turning movies into musicals. Billy Elliot The Musical is a 2005 British production based on the film of the same name. It follows the story of a young, motherless boy as he discovers his dreams. His father hopes Billy Elliot will become a successful boxer and help alleviate some of the family's financial woes. However, Billy accidentally discovers a love for ballet and secretly takes lessons. Will His family's stereotypical views of his choice stand in the way of his dream and his future?

Billy Elliot The Musical was nominated for nine Laurence Olivier Awards, winning four of them including best musical. It also won Best Musical in the following competitions: The Evening Standard Award 2005, the Critics' Circle Theatre Award 2005, and the Theatre Goers' Choice Award 2005. And this is before it even hit Broadway.

The film's writer Lee Hall contributes the lyrics, while Elton John composed the music. The film's director, Stephen Daldry, also directs the award-winning stage production. Billy Elliot The Musical is expected on Broadway in 2007.
