The original version of Beauty and the Beast was written back in 1740 by Madame Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villanueva. Sixteen years later, Beauty and the Beast, was abridged by Madame Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont, which is considered the best-known written version. The fairy tale has been adapted for the stage and the screen numerous times.

The French version of Beauty and the Beast was made in 1946. Beauty and the Beast has also been adapted as a television series, comic books, and made-for-television movies. Disney produced an animated version of Beauty and the Beast in 1991. The Disney version won Academy Awards for Best Song and Best Original Score, and was the first-ever animated picture to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. The original story had changed quite a bit in the Disney version; nevertheless, it is considered by many to be one of Walt Disney's classic animations.
