A Christmas Carol was originally written by Charles Dickens in 1843 in England. It has been adapted for stage, film, television, and radio. In addition, it has been adapted as the plot for countless television shows and films. It has also been credited as invigorating Christmas at a time when the holiday's popularity was on the decline.

The plot of A Christmas Carol tackles the issues of social injustice and poverty. It follows a single day in the life of miserly, bitter Ebenezer Scrooge. A successful businessman, Scrooge holds everything except wealth in contempt. He is visited by his former partner and warned that he needs to change his ways and embrace warmth, love, compassion, and charity. Visits from three spirits follow, showing Scrooge's past, present and future. As he relives his loves and losses the audience begins to understand his disposition. By the end of the evening Scrooge has a new lease on life.
