All Shook Up

All Shook Up couldn't be more accurately named. The bland setting (Eisenhower's 1950s America) belies the fact that the audience is in for an unpredictable, hilarious story that mixes Shakespeare themes with Hairspray and Elvis tunes and leads to genders confusion. What else can you expect when the director is Christopher Ashley, who has The Rocky Horror Picture Show under his belt? To the tune of 24 Elvis Presley songs, the story follows Natalie, a mechanic who desperately needs to escape the horrors of suburbia. That's when Elvis look-alike Chad rumbles into town on his motorcycle, capturing her attention. He doesn't return the interest in kind, so in order to be by him, she dresses like a boy, and manages to conjure up feelings deep inside Chad in the process. The costuming is as entertainingly exaggerated as the plot, and the timeless soundtrack keeps the story rolling along. All Shook Up will leave audiences all cracked up. The All Shook Up tour began in mid-September in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and continues until June 2007 in San Diego.
